Book to Movie: The Last Song
Well, I just got back from seeing The Last Song. It came out today. I hadn't planned on seeing it opening day, but it just sort of happened. I must say, I was pleasantly surprised with Miley Cyrus. She did a better job than I though she might. Of course, the part was written for her, so I'm sure that helped.
I don't want to spoil the story for anyone who might read the book or see the movie, but I did like both of them. They are a little different, though. As everyone knows, books are usually better than their movies, in part because of the details. I wasn't expecting this movie to have every detail that's in the book, but I was expecting more consistency with the storyline. Although the ends are essentially the same, the means are pretty different in places. Some because of left out details for sure, but other parts were in blatant contrast with the story as presented in the book. I think it was effective for the movie. I guess I just expected it to be the same since Nicholas Sparks wrote the screenplay before writing the book. (Weird? I think so, but apparently it was because they wanted to shoot the movie last summer.)
In summary, I enjoyed both the book and the movie. If I had to pick, I would probably say I liked the book better. However, I liked the movie a lot more than I expected. Although reading the book beforehand certainly helps fill in the details not explained in the movie, it is not necessary before seeing the movie. In fact, the movie does well on its own. (At the very least, you wouldn't have to keep thinking about what is different from the book!)
